This article reports on the first think tank event hosted by the Pet and Equine Insurance Sustainability Network, founded by Sharon Brown. Held at Howden’s offices, the event brought together over 100 attendees from 45 organisations—spanning insurers, MGAs, brokers, and regulators including the ABI, FCA, BIBA, MGAA, and Gibraltar FSC.
The session tackled the rising cost of veterinary care, the importance of preventative treatment, and transparency in pricing. It also explored how to ensure long-term affordability for pet and horse owners. Sharon Brown facilitated discussions around building a fair, sustainable insurance model that balances the needs of animals, owners, and insurers.
A key outcome was overwhelming support (92%+) for continued collaboration, and a proposal to form a steering group to help create an industry-wide association. This body would unite stakeholders to prioritise transparency, accountability, and education.
The piece outlines the network’s focus on addressing treatment inflation, promoting preventative care, and engaging stakeholders through initiatives like the upcoming think tank event. Sharon emphasises the importance of balance—between insurers, vets, and owners—and the need for shared action before the market becomes untenable.
