Insurance industry to work together – with vets – to ensure horse cover can continue

In a major step toward sustainability in equine and pet insurance, over 100 representatives from leading insurers gathered with veterinary professionals on November 21, 2024 for a think‑tank event hosted by the newly formed Pet and Equine Insurance Sustainability Network, founded by Sharon  Brown 

Aiming to tackle rising veterinary costs, escalating premiums, and the need for greater pricing transparency, the meeting focused on collaborative measures to make insurance more affordable and effective for horse and pet owners. Attendees—many of whom are animal owners themselves—shared insights on preventative care and industry-wide responsibility

Brown emphasised that insurers are compelled to raise premiums due to soaring vet fees, creating a cycle that may force owners into heartbreaking decisions, such as euthanising cherished animals due to financial constraints. The goal is to break that cycle by forming a steering group to establish a broader association uniting insurers, vets, and service providers in pursuit of transparency, accountability, and education 

Claudia Rodríguez, Agria’s risk and compliance director, described the event as emotionally powerful, reflecting a shared commitment to keeping consumer needs central. She called it a “rallying call for action” to ensure insurance is meaningful, not just accessible

The next steps include building an industry association to champion reform efforts. Owners and animal lovers are encouraged to contribute their experiences and ideas to shape a more sustainable future for equine and pet insurance.
